Entrance Ways and Why They're Important

It's a greeting space, a barrier between home and the outside world, a first impression when a buyer comes through your door. It’s a space that deserves due care – here’s how you can make that first impression count when selling your house in the Wellington market.

We don’t often give enough attention to the entrance way, but it is the first space buyers will see when they walk in your door, the first impression and it's important that it's a good one. Now ask yourself, is yours warm and welcoming, or is it cold, empty, and a little bit sad? We’re hoping for the former, but if the latter, do not despair. It's unavoidable the entrance is often a place we rush in and out of and you’d be telling fibs if you said your entry wasn’t a bit of a dumping ground. The first flat surface when entering the door usually plays home to keys, sunnies, bags, shoes, the list goes on. However this doesn’t mean it needs to be a scattered mess. Trays and bowls provide an excellent storage option for small bits and bobs used on the daily, whilst it is best when you have the house on the market to store jackets, shoes and bags in wardrobes in the bedrooms to keep the space from looking cluttered.

Welcome To The Jungle

We are huge advocates of bringing greenery into the home. Adding a plant to your entrance way is a nice migration moving from the outside into your home. Plants look great in photos and they make a great first impression with their sculptural look and pop of colour. This is exactly what you want in your entry when you have buyers walking in. Nothing says welcome home like a leafy indoor palm, or the large green leaves of a fig leaf plant.

Mirror or Art?

Mirror or a piece of art? you say, either way will do. A mirror is a great way to add extra light to a dark entrance way. If you hang it on the wall directly across from a window or hallway it will reflect the light perfectly. It will also make it feel larger so if you are dealing with a smaller space hanging a mirror on the wall is a great way to enhance your entrance and make it feel more spacious. Art is a great way to add interest and colour without taking up floor space. When hanging art in an entrance way it is always best to think of what the buyer will see when they first walk in the door, hang it directly in front of the door so it's the first thing they see as they come in your door for extra impact.

The Getting Ready Chair

The chair that sits unassumingly at your front door is functional and at the same time can give the space a softness and feeling of comfort. Sure not all entrances are big enough for a beautiful armchair but a bench or even a dining chair can have the same effect. Adding a bit of interest and homeliness for your buyers to appreciate when coming in out of the Wellington wind. It can also be functional for when buyers are taking their shoes off, making sure not to hold others up who are waiting behind them.
